Merry Xmas!
December 15, 2008 – 5:47 pmHi again,
It’s been quite a while since I wrote anything here, but now I’m sitting on the train from Stockholm to Copenhagen, and on Wednesday I’ll fly home to the Faroes for Christmas. I don’t mind spending five hours on this train. It’s nice to be left to yourself once in a while…just thinking can be quite entertaining.
I’ve been fully occupied writing songs to my next album up until a few weeks ago, when we sat down and chose 10 songs out of 50 recorded demos. It was much harder than I thought it would be…and you really need to kill your darlings. My A&R told me that there would only be room for ten songs on the album. If I wanted 12 songs, they would have to be so good that I’d cry if they were left out
(And of course there will be twelve songs… ;) Now we’ve moved on to the next phase, choosing the right producer…I’ve worked with a lot of talented people these last three years, and there are so many ways to go. But finally I know in which direction we’ll take the sound. In January we’ll probably start recording the album.
Part from that I’ve been playing with my band again. We played when there was a premiere of the latest James Bond movie in Sälen. It felt like a great show and it was good to get together again.
We also had an acoustic little concert at at cozy place called Moonbeam in Södermalm, Stockholm. Jonas Nilsson the guitarist in our band played the mandolin and Julia Curman played the piano and I played my acoustic guitar. It was a really small and intimate gig.
Another thing that has inspired me in November was that I started taking trumpet lessons with Patrik Skog, at Kungliga Musikhögskolan in Stockholm. It’s really cool to play the trumpet again. I stopped taking trumpet lessons when I was twelve, and it somehow faded in the background, while singing took up most of my time. But since I digged it up again and started using it on some recordings, as well as it’s really fun to play trumpet with the band, I’ve decided to make it part of the sound on the new album.
Merry Xmas!

Of course, you don’t need to “kill” the songs that didn’t make the final 10. Some of them could reappear on future albums. (I’m thinking especially of “Anywhere I Go”!) Or they could become B-sides for future singles.
I wonder why record labels still limit most CDs to ten songs. A CD can hold up to 80 minutes of music; why should a CD end up with only 35-40 minutes? As a big fan of music, I like to keep listening. If the music is good, the more, the better!
